Do Ukrainian Products Need to Be Adapted for the European Market?

Published: June 6, 2024
In 2022, trade volume between Ukraine and the Czech Republic amounted to $2,791.7 million, which is 3.6% less compared to 2021. The basic principles of economic relations and the entry of Ukrainian exporters into the Czech market are regulated by the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union, which came into force on September 1, 2017. This is particularly relevant to the creation of a free trade area.

According to Annex I-A to the Association Agreement, import duty rates are gradually being reduced. Comprehensive information about current EU customs tariffs for Ukrainian goods, as well as tax conditions in different EU countries and product requirements, can be found on the European Commission’s Trade Helpdesk web resource.

To adapt a Ukrainian product for the European market, NAWI recommends considering several key aspects:
  • Compliance with EU legislative norms and standards. It is necessary to ensure that products comply with all European regulations, including environmental, technical, and safety standards. The Czech market uses international certificates that meet EU norms. The certification process in the Czech Republic is carried out by accredited certification bodies under the Czech Office for Standards, Metrology, and Testing, which is a department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic.
  • Cultural adaptation. It is important to consider the mentality and adapt not only the product but also marketing and advertising materials to avoid cultural misunderstandings.
  • Language localization. Translate all communication materials, including packaging and instructions, into Czech.
  • Product positioning. Develop a product positioning strategy considering local consumer preferences and current trends.
  • Pricing and distribution. Assess competitiveness and choose effective distribution channels.

Adapting a Ukrainian product for the European market requires deep analysis and the ability to respond quickly to changes, ensuring successful market entry and long-term success.
