You want to start your own business in the Czech Republic but don’t know where to begin or what the requirements are for non-residents.
Those considering a živnost as the basis for a residence permit
A živnost (trade licence) can be used as a basis for a residence permit — let’s look at the conditions.
Those transitioning from an employment contract to self-employment
Are you employed but want to start your own business alongside or instead of your job? We explain how to combine the two.
Entrepreneurs (živnostníci) planning to switch from sole trading to an s.r.o. company
Already running a živnost but thinking about switching to a corporate structure — we break down the pros and cons.
Tax optimisation and the flat-rate scheme
Many budding entrepreneurs in the Czech Republic are attracted by the opportunity to use a simplified tax system known as the paušální režim. This system allows you to combine income tax, social security and health insurance contributions into a single convenient fixed payment. During our consultation, we calculate in detail how beneficial this system is specifically for your field of activity and expected income. We also explain the strict criteria for switching to this system, so that you do not inadvertently breach the limits set by the state. As a result, you receive the most optimal and secure financial model, which will relieve you of complex monthly bookkeeping.
Verification of qualifications and choice of licence
Czech legislation strictly divides business activities into free (volná), craft (řemeslná) and licensed (vázaná) categories. Whilst a simple application is sufficient for free trade, the other categories require mandatory confirmation of your education or relevant work experience. We help foreigners correctly classify their business niche and compile a comprehensive set of documents for the Trade Licensing Office. Our specialists check in advance that your diplomas and certificates meet local requirements, minimising the risk of registration being refused. Thanks to our expert support, you will be able to launch your project quickly, whilst strictly complying with all industry standards in the Czech Republic.

FAQ

Can a foreigner without a residence permit set up a business in the Czech Republic?

Yes, citizens of certain countries can set up a trade without a residence permit — but there are nuances depending on nationality and the type of business. We’ll assess your specific situation during a consultation.

How does a trade licence (živnost) differ from an s.r.o.?

A živnost is a form of self-employment (sole trader). An s.r.o. is a limited liability company. They have different tax regimes, liabilities and levels of asset protection.

What taxes and contributions does a živnostník (sole trader) pay?

In the Czech Republic, a živnostník pays monthly advance contributions to social insurance (OSSZ) and health insurance (ZP), and also submits an annual tax return (daňové přiznání). Depending on the nature of the work, you can use paušální výdaje — a simplified scheme where expenses are calculated at a fixed rate rather than based on actual costs. We can discuss the specific tax model and payment amounts during a consultation.

Is it possible to combine a trade licence (živnost) with employment under an employment contract?

Yes, this is permitted. It is important to correctly account for contributions to the OSSZ and ZP to avoid double payments. We’ll go through this in detail during a consultation.

How quickly can I set up a živnost?

Provided all documents are in order, within a few working days.

How much does a consultation on setting up a živnost cost for a foreigner?

The consultation costs 5 000 CZK. During this time, we’ll analyse your situation, answer specific questions and provide a written summary with recommendations.
